MTN contract cancellation: how to cancel and what it costs
MTN contract cancellation goes through an MTN agent on 135, and MTN asks for 20 days’ notice before your contract ends. A contract that reaches its end date doesn’t stop by itself: it carries on month to month until you cancel it.
The short answer
Dial 135 from your MTN phone (or 083 135 from another phone) and ask an agent to cancel your contract. Give 20 days’ notice before it ends; MTN can take up to 20 business days to process it. The agent will tell you what it costs.

How to cancel
- Check your contract end date.
- At least 20 days before it ends, dial 135 and ask for an agent.
- Ask the agent for a breakdown of the cancellation costs.
- Confirm the cancellation and write down the reference number.
What it can cost
- What’s still owed on a device, if your contract included one
- One month’s subscription
- Any usage charges still to come
If you port your number to another network before the contract period ends, MTN says cancellation fees apply.
An expired contract keeps running
MTN says a cellphone or device contract doesn’t end automatically. If you don’t ask to cancel it, it continues month to month. MTN sends a reminder before your contract term ends.
